On Friday (Oct. 16), punk legends came together to celebrate fifty years of women in punk, specifically paying homage to the late icon Poly Styrene of X-Ray Spex, at Electric Brixton in London. The she-punk supergroup included Lora Logic (X-Ray Spex/Essential Logic), Paul Dean (X-Ray Spex), Gina Birch (The Raincoats), Hollie Cook (The Slits) and Akiko Matsuura (Comanechi / Pre). They were joined by other acts, including Big Joanie, Essential Logic, Gina Birch & The Unreasonables and HotWax.
The night featured renditions of important punk anthems like "Oh Bondage Up Yours!" and "The Day The World Turned Dayglo" from X-Ray Spex's seminal 1978 album Germfree Adolescents and the Slits' "Typical Girls" and their cover of "Heard It Through The Grapevine" from their influential 1979 album Cut.
