It's been a breakout year for Slayyyter, whose new album WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA solidified her in the current pop canon. Since she started releasing music under the moniker in 2019, she's faced criticism for old social media posts containing racial slurs. She issued an apology at the end of that year, and in January 2020 she said she would donate proceeds from physical sales to charities supporting the Black LGBTQ+ community.
However, in the wake of her rise, people are digging up the old posts again, as well as criticizing her past as a cam girl. She acknowledged the backlash on a now-defunct secret Twitter account. "everyone trying to recancel me for highschool things & behavior i dont know how many times i have to say i am not that kind of person anymore and haven't been for over 15 years. i am 30 now. i don't act or say the things i did in highschool," she wrote in one tweet.
She continued, "the deep digging on cam girl stuff, me in friends vlogs, random old tweets of me talking about sex work etc,. this new found attention is cool and all but its unsettling about having people try to find things to ruin me with. why do you want to see me fail so bad." "my voice is gone," she wrote. "i am so sick and so tired but i refuse to cancel any shows so just need your help singing tonight (cologne fans). i am having anxiety about everything lately but all i know in my heart is i want you to walk in the venue doors and have a good time and enjoy." She has been struggling with her voice, and on Friday (Oct. 23) she canceled the rest of her EU/UK tour, posting, "hey guys - i fully lost my voice and doctors are recommending that i cancel copenhagen and hamburg shows to protect further damage. i'm devastated and wanted to play for you but i just can't deliver a proper show. tour will resume in warsaw on the 24th after i have a chance to regain my voice. i'm so sorry and hope to make it up to you soon. i love you guys so much. refunds will be available at the point of purchase." Last week tickets for Slayyyter's first MSG show sold out in 15 minutes. Also on Friday, Radio 1 released a Live Lounge cover of "brand new chanel$" by Rachel Chinouriri.
The English indie pop star also earned her first Top 10 album in the UK yesterday.
