An incredibly expensive set of pre-constructed Magic: The Gathering decks is finally going to become more widely available. Wizards of the Coast confirmed to IGN that the Warhammer 40K Commander Decks will receive a "small reprint" that will be available to distributors and stores soon. Released in 2022, the four decks were the first precons in the Universes Beyond series, and they introduced many cards that have never been reprinted.
While they originally cost $59.99, each of the four decks now sells for hundreds of dollars from secondary retailers. On TCGPlayer, bundles including unopened versions of all four decks have sold for a median price of roughly $1,000 over the last few months. Each of the four decks is based on a different faction in the Warhammer 40K universe.
Forces of the Imperium is an Esper (white-blue-black) deck centered on Imperial Inquisitors and the Investigate mechanic, which creates Clue tokens that can be sacrificed to draw cards. Necron Dynasties is a mono-black deck focused on artifact creatures, and is typically the most expensive Warhammer precon on the secondary market. Tyranid Swarm is a Temur (blue-red-green) deck that aims to go wide.
The Ruinous Powers is a Grixis (blue-black-red) deck based on the Forces of Chaos. Its Commander Abaddon the Despoiler has a powerful Cascade ability that lets you chain together multiple spells. Each deck includes 100 cards, 42 of which were created for this release.
While the Warhammer 40K Commander Decks were well-received at release, the Universes Beyond brand has been very divisive. Many dislike the Fortnite-style influx of IP that has resulted in the series’ traditional dragons, elves, and angels facing off against SpongeBob SquarePants and Spider-Man. Others are understandably happy they get to summon characters like Cloud Strife and Gandalf.
These crossovers added to the number of Magic sets released each year, making it hard to keep up with a flood of new cards. It’s never been more expensive to stay competitive in some of the game’s premier formats.
