The PlayStation 5 (and its accessories) is no stranger to limited editions. Just this year, Sony released a Wolverine-themed take on the console, as well as Marathon-themed and Grand Theft Auto 6–themed DualSense controllers. But all these special editions are a little showy.
What does Sony have for the discerning gamer that wants to keep things tasteful? Luckily, Sony's latest hardware release fills that void. There is, of course, a catch.
The Japanese PlayStation Blog (as spotted by Push Square) has revealed the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black. It will be released on Nov. 19 (the same day as Grand Theft Auto 6) and will cost ¥55,000. As the name suggests, the new edition wraps the entire console and the bundled DualSense controller in a sleek, matte-black finish.
The console is exclusive to Japan. Last year, Sony revealed a Japanese-language-only PlayStation 5 that would be sold exclusively in Japan for ¥55,000. The special edition is meant to offer the console at a relatively lower price than Sony can offer in the United States, due to unpredictable import tariffs and trade policies.
For reference, the Japan-exclusive PlayStation 5 costs roughly the equivalent of $350, whereas the Digital PlayStation 5 costs $599 in the United States. In fact, the console has only gotten more expensive since it was initially released. This Midnight Black variation is identical to the Japan-exclusive PlayStation 5 launched last year, just in a new color wave.
Players who purchase the new Midnight Black PlayStation 5 get the console and a matching DualSense controller. A separate disc drive must be purchased to play disc-based games. Luckily, Sony will also release a Midnight Black disc drive for ¥11,980.
