Pitso Mosimane has been reappointed as head coach of South Africa's men's national team. The 62-year-old previously served as Bafana Bafana boss between July 2010 and June 2012. He replaces Hugo Broos, who stepped down after five years in the role when his contract expired at the end of July.
The Belgian led the side to a third-placed finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) and the last 32 of this year's World Cup, when South Africa returned to the finals for the first time since hosting in 2010. The decision to rehire Mosimane was approved by the South Africa Football Association's executive committee on 8 August, but the former Mamelodi Sundowns boss was unveiled to the media in Johannesburg on Tuesday after finalising his contract and technical team. The length of his deal has not been announced.
South Africa failed to qualify for the 2012 Afcon during Mosimane's first stint in charge after mistakenly believing a draw in their final group game against Sierra Leone would be enough to secure a spot at the finals. He parted company with Bafana Bafana in June 2012 after a 1-1 home draw against Ethiopia in their first qualifier for the 2014 World Cup. Since then he has enjoyed club success with Sundowns and Egyptian giants Al Ahly, winning the African Champions League three times.
More recently he has had spells managing in Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi and Iran.
