South Carolina Considering Major QB Shakeup Amid LaNorris Sellers’ Struggles

South Carolina is reportedly preparing for a possible change at quarterback as LaNorris Sellers struggles.

After a disappointing 2025 season, this was supposed to be the year for South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers. Instead, the Gamecocks are struggling, and Sellers has been a big part of the reason why. Through four games, he has completed just 62.1% of his passes for 833 yards and six touchdowns with four interceptions, along with 244 rushing yards and one rushing score.

South Carolina enters Saturday's game against Kentucky under real pressure to turn things around after back-to-back losses to SEC rivals Mississippi State and Alabama. And according to ESPN's Pete Thamel, the team has already made changes in case Sellers doesn't improve, with backup Cutter Woods taking reps with the first-team offense this week. "Sellers remains the starting quarterback, but the increased reps is a tangible change that shows South Carolina is preparing for the possibility of playing Woods," Thamel wrote.

"Coach Shane Beamer stressed competition as a theme this week in front of the team, a source told ESPN. And the message to Sellers that he has to play better is clear." In 2024, his first season as the starter, he completed 65.6% of his passes for 2,534 yards and 18 touchdowns with seven interceptions, along with 674 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns.

He earned freshman All-American, SEC Freshman of the Year, and third-team All-SEC honors, and led the Gamecocks to a 9-4 record, highlighted by a six-game win streak late in the season that included wins over Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, Missouri, and Clemson. But the team fell to 4-8 last season, Sellers regressed, and there's now serious concern that the problems haven't gone away four games into this year. Saturday's matchup against the Wildcats is a crucial test for Sellers to prove he can still play at an all-SEC level and help turn the program around.

With this expected to be his last season of college football, it could have massive implications not just for his future at South Carolina but for his NFL draft stock. At 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds, he has the kind of skill set NFL teams want to build around, but one breakout season might not be enough to justify the investment.
