South Carolina entered Saturday desperately needing a victory. Not only did they fulfill that need, the Gamecocks delivered one of the biggest upsets of the college football weekend. Led by quarterback LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina stunned No. 16 Florida with a convincing 38-19 victory at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville.
Sellers accounted for five touchdowns, throwing four and rushing for another, as the Gamecocks secured their first Southeastern Conference victory in more than a year. For a South Carolina team that had struggled to finish games throughout the season, Saturday’s performance was a much-needed reminder of what the program is capable of accomplishing. The Gamecocks entered the matchup with a 2-3 record and had lost three consecutive games, including a heartbreaking 35-34 overtime defeat against Kentucky the previous weekend.
That loss was particularly frustrating after South Carolina jumped out to a 17-0 lead before allowing the Wildcats to complete the comeback. But against Florida, the Gamecocks made sure history wouldn’t repeat itself. The Gators entered Saturday ranked No. 16 nationally with a 4-1 record, looking to bounce back from a 45-17 loss to Missouri.
Florida opened the season with four consecutive victories, including an impressive win over Ole Miss that helped establish the Gators as one of the SEC's early surprises. But South Carolina wasn't intimidated by Florida's success and entered Saturday determined to turn its own season around. The Gators struck first when quarterback Aaron Philo connected with Bailey Stockton for a 59-yard touchdown, giving Florida an early 7-0 lead.
However, the Gamecocks refused to let the early deficit dictate the rest of the afternoon. Sellers found wide receiver Nyck Harbor for a touchdown to tie the game, setting the stage for a competitive first half. Florida regained the lead with a field goal early in the second quarter, but South Carolina answered with a 37-yard field goal from Malik Orsan.
With the score tied at 10, the Gamecocks’ defense delivered one of the biggest plays of the afternoon. Defensive back Vicari Swain intercepted Philo, giving South Carolina possession deep in Florida territory. Sellers took advantage of the opportunity, connecting with Mazeo Bennett Jr. for a 12-yard touchdown that gave the Gamecocks a 17-10 lead heading into halftime.
