With Hoshoryu out and questions surrounding the fitness of Onosato and Aonishiki, Kirishima has emerged as the man to beat.
The bad news regarding Hoshoryu came, as expected, just before the start of the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament. The yokozuna has failed to recover from surgery on his right knee sufficiently to allow participation in the September meet and will be absent from Day 1. While unfortunate, the news comes as no surprise given Hoshoryu’s inability to take part in bouts during the summer regional tour and the Yokozuna Deliberation Council open practice.
