Don't forget about this backup quarterback.

Will Howard might not be getting the same hype as one of the Steelers' other young quarterbacks (you know who we mean), but his preseason performance deserves a closer look. While lots of the excitement has centered around rookie Drew Allar, Howard has put together the kind of outing that should have Pittsburgh feeling good about his development. Allar has generated buzz with scoring drives and explosive plays, but that's not the whole story.

Some of those big gains came against lesser competition. That doesn't take away from what he's done, but it does make Howard's performance worth appreciating on its own. His latest preseason showing only gives those opinions more weight. One reason for the optimism is the environment around him. Howard has a better offensive staff helping with his development, which could make a real difference as he continues adjusting to the NFL.

Having the right coaching and support can give a young quarterback a much better chance to turn his natural ability into something more consistent. There's also an interesting bigger-picture question developing in Pittsburgh. The Steelers have spent lots of time searching for answers at quarterback, but they could suddenly have multiple young players worth watching.

That would've sounded unlikely not long ago. But it's exactly what they need as they enter their last season with Aaron Rodgers. But, that's not really the point. He's showing enough to make the Steelers take notice, and perhaps more importantly, he's making it harder to dismiss him as simply another young quarterback trying to get his feet wet.
