The defending Super Bowl champions are already facing a huge setback in their effort to defend the title. The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots are facing off in a Super Bowl LX rematch on Wednesday, and in the first quarter, a Seahawks star suffered what appears to be a significant injury. Quarterback Sam Darnold limped to the locker room at the end of his team's first drive, which he finished going 1-for-2 for 13 yards.
Darnold had been sacked and it seemed he hurt his right leg. He went to the injury tent, then ultimately to the locker room for further treatment. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter soon revealed that Darnold hurt his hip and is questionable to return.
In the meantime, backup QB Drew Lock stepped in for the Seahawks. If Darnold's injury is significant, it marks a cruel twist in his career. Darnold was a top draft pick, going third overall in 2018, though his career floundered with the New York Jets.
He then spent time with the Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers. He ultimately resuscitated his career with the Minnesota Vikings in 2024, then was atop the football world after last year's title run. In that season, he threw for more than 4,000 yards and 25 touchdowns, then added five more touchdown passes in the playoffs.
For a player many counted out, Darnold's rise from draft bust to Super Bowl-winning quarterback is a testament to his dedication. Now, it seems he'll have to put that tenacity to use yet again as he works to recover from this apparent injury.
