Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is expected to make a decision soon on Cabinet and Liberal Democratic Party executive changes as her administration looks to shore up its public support and strengthen its position within the party before the autumn session of parliament. While she has not yet announced any details of potential personnel changes, Takaichi has begun meeting with LDP executives. On Tuesday she met with LDP Vice President Taro Aso, who then met with Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi on Tuesday evening.
In deciding who to keep and who to replace, Takaichi will consider a number of factors. Appointing someone popular to a ministerial position might boost the administration’s popularity with the public. But if the new minister is a political rival, accepting a Cabinet post also makes it more difficult for that person to challenge the prime minister over the next year, as Cabinet ministers are expected to support the administration.
