No. 14 Tennessee will host No. 1 Texas on Saturday in a matchup that will have huge implications down the line for the College Football Playoff. While preparing to play the Longhorns, the Volunteers are dealing with a shorthanded staff as linebackers coach William Inge deals with a medical issue. Tennessee released a statement confirming that Inge is in the hospital.
"Tennessee linebackers coach William Inge has been in the hospital dealing with a personal medical issue," the Volunteers statement reads. "Coach Inge and his family appreciate your prayers and support, and we ask that you respect their privacy at this time." It's unclear if Inge will return for Saturday's game.
The Volunteers’ linebacker group is a key core of the defense. Amare Campbell, Arion Carter, and Edwin Spillman are the three leading tacklers on the defense. Campbell leads Tennessee with 17 tackles through the first three games.
Tennessee enters Saturday's contest with a 3-0 record that includes wins over Furman, Georgia Tech, and Kennesaw State. Texas will be the stiffest competition the Volunteers have faced this year. Texas has the best win of the college football season so far, knocking off then-No. 1 Ohio State 24-23 in a comeback win at home on Sept. 12.
Now, Arch Manning and Texas will have to go on the road in one of the loudest environments. The Longhorns and Volunteers have only met on the gridiron three times before Saturday's game. Texas has won two of those games.
