Tension Rising Between Knicks Players, Owner James Dolan: Report

Stephen A. Smith reveals reported tension between Knicks owner James Dolan and players as the team begins its title defense.

The New York Knicks are facing questions about a possible behind-the-scenes divide. Smith claims owner James Dolan is unhappy with players over a potential White House visit. The allegation comes as New York begins its title defense after winning its first NBA championship since 1973.

The situation stems from the relationship between Dolan and President Donald Trump. Trump attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden in June, sitting alongside Dolan as the Knicks faced the San Antonio Spurs. The president's appearance made history as the first time a sitting U.S. president attended an NBA Finals game.

Speaking about the reported tension, Smith acknowledged that he had not confirmed the claims directly with players but questioned how Dolan might react if some members of the team opposed the visit: "This is what I've been hearing, and I'm going to say it. Don't know how much truth there is to it because I haven't heard from the players directly," Smith said. "But one of the things that people have been talking about around New York City and around Madison Square Garden is that the climate was a little bit different." He added that he believed Dolan could be upset because players might not want to visit the White House, criticizing the owner as "a walking embodiment of petulance." Smith also raised concerns about the long-term implications for New York, suggesting Dolan could become complacent after the franchise's breakthrough championship.

"He's that kind of guy," Smith said. "He is petty enough to have an attitude because he's tight with Trump and wants to go to the White House." However, the claim remains unverified. Knicks head coach Mike Brown said in September that the organization was still discussing the visit and would make the decision together.

On the court, New York has also endured a difficult start to its title defense. The Knicks opened the season with three consecutive losses before beating the Detroit Pistons 111-97. Karl-Anthony Towns recorded 27 points and 20 rebounds, while Jalen Brunson added 23 points.

The Knicks are set to face the Chicago Bulls in their next game.
