Garigari-kun, an iconic Japanese popsicle, has proven hugely popular among people ranging from children to older adults since Akagi Nyugyo, an ice cream manufacturer based in Fukaya, Saitama Prefecture, started producing and selling the product in 1981. The product features a distinctive dual texture — a thin outer popsicle layer and a packed core of crunchy shaved ice grains. While the treat remains popular in Japan, many fans might not know that Koriyama Reizo Seihyo — a refrigerated warehousing firm in Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture, that is better known as Gunrei — is behind the ice used in Garigari-kun.
Gunrei, established in 1917, initially did business with Akagi Nyugyo as a wholesaler selling the firm’s frozen sweets.
