Christopher Nolan‘s blockbuster “The Odyssey” is officially the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time with $1.352 billion worldwide, overtaking the benchmark set by 2024’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” with $1.338 billion. Since then, the big-budget adaptation of Homer’s epic poem has generated $516 million domestically and $835 million internationally — a massive tally for any movie, but especially an R-rated sword-and-sandal adventure that’s nearly three hours long. Much of the fanfare for “The Odyssey” has revolved around Imax, which has racked up $354 million in revenue.

It’s the fifth release this year and third R-rated movie ever (joining the company of “Joker”) to surpass $1 billion in revenue. Ryan Reynolds, the creative force behind Marvel’s “Deadpool” franchise, celebrated the passing of the baton to Nolan and company. Among its many other box office milestones, “The Odyssey” ranks as Nolan’s biggest movie of all time, surpassing 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises” ($1.08 billion, not adjusted for inflation), as well as Imax’s highest-grossing release of all time, outpacing 2009’s “Avatar” ($271 million, not adjusted for inflation).

Damon leads the all-star ensemble of Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal and John Leguizamo.
