Tropical Storm Dujuan is forecast to approach eastern Japan over Silver Week, bringing heavy rain, strong winds and high waves to the Tokyo region after first passing near the Ogasawara and Izu island chains. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the storm was about 170 kilometers south-southeast of Chichijima in the Ogasawara Islands as of 3 p.m. Friday and moving west-northwest at a speed of 35 kph.

Dujuan had a central pressure of 975 hectopascals and maximum sustained winds near its center of 108 kph, with gusts of as much as 162 kph, the agency said. The storm is expected to pass near the Ogasawara Islands from Friday into Saturday before turning north and approaching the Izu Islands on Sunday. It may then shift north-northeast and approach the Pacific coast of eastern Japan from Sunday into Monday.

The JMA warned that the Ogasawara Islands could see as much as 250 millimeters of rain in the 24 hours through noon Saturday. The Izu Islands could receive as much as 200 mm in the following 24 hours, while parts of the Kanto region could see up to 150 mm. Another 200 mm could fall in both Kanto and the Izu Islands during the 24 hours through noon Monday.

Strong winds and rough seas are also expected. Maximum sustained winds of 90 kph, with gusts of 126 kph, are forecast for the Ogasawara Islands on Friday and Saturday. Winds around the Izu Islands could reach 101 kph on Sunday, with gusts of as much as 144 kph.

Waves could reach 7 meters around the Ogasawara Islands on Friday and Saturday and around the Izu Islands on Sunday. Waves of as much as 6 meters are forecast along the Kanto coast Sunday, with swells accompanying the storm. The agency warned of an increased risk of landslides, flooding in low-lying areas and swollen rivers.

Heavy rain is also possible along the Pacific coast from the Tokai region through northeastern Japan from Sunday into Monday. Dujuan is forecast to accelerate northeastward away from Japan and over the Pacific by Tuesday.
