Troy Aikman and Joe Buck are one of the more recognizable sports broadcasting duos in the industry. The voices of ESPN’s “Monday Night Football,” both have received praise over the years for the work they do calling some of the biggest games of the NFL season. However, Aikman has come under fire recently for some sloppy analysis, which was evident in Monday’s Kansas City Chiefs-Denver Broncos Week 1 matchup.
In fact, Aikman’s performance was so noticeably bad that he was called out by popular radio personality Dan Le Batard for some egregious gaffes. Le Batard stated: “This is what Troy Aikman — and ESPN has the Super Bowl this year — this is what Troy Aikman said… “‘The Denver roster is as deep as any in football.’ “‘(Andy) Reid understands as much as anyone in football that they’ve gotta run the football.’ “‘Pat Bryant had as good a camp as anyone in football.’ “‘Denver has as deep a wide receiver room as anyone in football.’ “‘Denver has as good a secondary as there is in all of football.’ “‘Trent McDuffie is as good as anyone in all of football’ — that was (just) the first quarter.’” Le Batard continued listing off some more of Aikman’s offenses while a co-host chimed in: “I don’t believe you.” Seven more similar instances were rattled off before Le Batard questioned why Aikman was considered among the best broadcasters in the eyes of many. Is this what’s happening here, where it’s just, everyone in this game and the next game and every one Aikman does is as good as anyone in football?” Given how unforgiving social media is, commentators have to be on their game every week.
NBC’s Cris Collinsworth, Amazon Prime’s Al Michaels, Fox’s Tom Brady, and CBS’ Tony Romo are among those constantly criticized for either their hot takes or continually making glaring errors during games. It seems Aikman has now joined that group.
