Trump Critics Keep Mocking Women in His Orbit Over Their Looks

Trump critics and partisan social media accounts have mocked Barbera Thornhill, Susan Dell and Kimberly Guilfoyle's looks.

Several prominent Donald Trump critics and partisan social media accounts have mocked the appearances of Barbera Thornhill, Susan Dell and Kimberly Guilfoyle in October. Newsweek contacted the U.S. Department of State via its media inquiries form for comment on Thornhill and contacted representatives for Dell and Guilfoyle via email on Wednesday.

The remarks have renewed questions about how women’s looks become political ammunition, often eclipsing scrutiny of their work, conduct or qualifications. Appearance-based criticism has become a recurring feature of polarized American politics, spreading rapidly when photographs or videos of public figures circulate online. The latest posts also expose a bipartisan contradiction: allies condemn personal ridicule aimed at their own side while political leaders and commentators sometimes deploy it against opponents.

Thornhill was welcomed to the State Department on October 13 as Ambassador at Large to monitor and combat trafficking. The Senate confirmed Thornhill on August 7 as part of a group of nominees approved in a 51–47 vote. Her official portrait quickly circulated on social media, where some users questioned whether the image was genuine and others made disparaging remarks about her appearance.

No verified evidence has established that the State Department photograph was digitally manipulated. Tim Miller, a former Republican strategist and prominent Trump critic, reposted the announcement with a line suggesting Thornhill would always keep her eyes open for traffickers. Anti-Trump X account Spiro’s Ghost responded with a GIF from the film Brazil depicting a cosmetic procedure.

Those posts criticized Thornhill personally rather than addressing her credentials, though her background has separately attracted substantive scrutiny: Thornhill previously worked as a business executive and philanthropist, while anti-trafficking organization Protect All Children from Trafficking (PACT) questioned whether she had sufficient federal policy experience, the International Business Times reported. Dell became the subject of similar commentary after joining husband Michael Dell and Trump at the White House on October 7 to discuss Trump Accounts, children’s investment accounts supported by the couple’s $6.25 billion commitment. Their pledge was designed to provide $250 to as many as 25 million eligible children.

Posts included comparisons between older and recent images, along with references to “Mar-a-Lago face,” artificial intelligence and movie characters. Such remarks did not establish anything about Dell’s health or whether she had undergone cosmetic treatment, and no verified engagement data shows how representative they were of wider public opinion. The verified Liberal account Not Your Average Liberal shared one comparison under the phrase “The MAGA Effect.” Donald Trump's son, Eric Trump, condemned the treatment as “vicious attacks” on X, arguing that attention should instead be paid to the Dells’ philanthropy.
