President Donald Trump used a surprise phone call with NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang at the All-In Summit (an annual technology and policy conference organized by the hosts of the ‘All-In’ podcast) in Los Angeles on Monday to dismiss concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) and to defend the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure. Huang, who was speaking on stage in front of thousands of attendees, answered the call and attempted to put Trump on speakerphone. Trump joked that Huang could design the world's most advanced AI chips but couldn’t put him on loudspeaker.
Trump then turned to the debate over AI safety, describing warnings that AI could pose an existential threat as a "hoax" and a "scam." He argued that opposition to data center construction was helping geopolitical rivals such as China and claimed that AI infrastructure would be "the oil of the next 20, 25 years," generating wealth for states and local communities. "The robots are not going to be taking over the world. The AI will not be taking over the rest of the world.
The whole thing is a hoax," Trump said during the call. Huang appeared to be supportive, responding that America would not allow its lead in AI to slip, which prompted loud cheering and clapping from the hosts and crowd. The remarks come as a growing debate erupts within the AI industry after leading figures, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, called for slowing the development of increasingly powerful AI systems and introducing stronger safety measures.
