President Donald Trump has referred to "our new and beautiful Greenland," as he touted a new program to explore oil, gas and minerals deposits. The announcement follows a security agreement to boost American military and security presence on the island, which was signed in September between the U.S., Greenland and Denmark. The deal only gives the U.S. access to the island's airspace and territory, with Greenland remaining an autonomously run part of the kingdom of Denmark.
The deal followed months of threats by Trump to take over the island, by force if necessary. "There are experts that are saying that the amount of easily available oil is far greater than that of almost any land, anywhere in the world and, even more importantly, from a security purpose in the defense and offense of both the United States of America, and Europe, is second to none," Trump wrote on Truth Social on Wednesday. "Any future attack on the United States will have to come across Greenland, where our defense will routinely knock down drones, missiles, or any other form of weapon not yet even conceived.
