The University of Tokyo has chosen its first female president to lead the top-tier university, which has recently struggled with a string of scandals and funding setbacks. Professor Yuko Fujigaki, 64, of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, is an expert in the interdisciplinary field of science, technology and society. She will replace current President Teruo Fujii.
Fujigaki told a news conference Tuesday that she will do her best to restore the public’s trust in the school and in academia as a whole.
