Air Force’s 52nd Fighter Wing crashed at Spangdahlem Air Base in western Germany on Tuesday afternoon. The aircraft came down at around 2:30 p.m. local time, the 52nd Fighter Wing told POLITICO. The pilot ejected safely and received immediate medical care from emergency-response personnel.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and “additional information will be released as it becomes available,” the spokesperson said. German air traffic control told German outlet SWR that the crash followed an exercise involving several aircraft. Other planes diverted to Ramstein air base after the incident.
Emergency crews from the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm district’s fire and disaster-protection services also responded. The 52nd Fighter Wing operates F-16 fighter jets in support of U.S. and NATO missions. F-16 crashed near Zemmer-Rodt, south of the base, during a routine training flight.
The pilot ejected and suffered minor injuries. The German Defense Ministry has not responded to POLITICO’s request for comment.
