The Detroit Lions welcomed free-agent running back Kareem Hunt for a workout on Tuesday, according to a report from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter. Hunt appeared in 17 regular-season games for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2025, rushing for 611 yards and eight touchdowns, while reeling in 18 catches for 143 yards and another score. The Lions already have their superstar bell-cow running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who recently became the highest-paid RB in NFL history, at the top of the depth chart.
Backup running back Isiah Pacheco, another former Chief, is currently sidelined with a sprained MCL injury he suffered earlier this month. Hunt, 31, is searching for his next landing spot as he enters his 10th NFL campaign. His best career season remains his rookie campaign with the Chiefs, when he led the league in rushing yards (1,327) and earned his lone career Pro-Bowl selection.
The Lions will take the field for their final preseason matchup against the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday. Then, they'll open up their regular-season schedule with a Week 1 matchup against the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 13.
