Kyler Murray won't get to make an early statement when the Minnesota Vikings play the Chicago Bears this Sunday. The Vikings officially ruled out Murray for the Week 2 game due to a concussion suffered in a Week 1 win over the Green Bay Packers. Head coach Kevin O'Connell said Carson Wentz will start for Minnesota over second-string quarterback J.J.
Murray left his Vikings debut in the first quarter after getting hit on the head while sliding. The quarterback was a limited participant in practice throughout the week but still must clear the concussion protocol to return. Per Ben Goessling of the Minnesota Star Tribune, the Vikings expect Murray to get cleared next week.
Minnesota signed Murray to a one-year, $1.3 million contract after seven seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, who released him in March. The former No. 1 pick played five games before suffering a season-ending foot injury, ending his Cardinals tenure with a 92.2 quarterback rating in 87 games. Murray didn't get much time to get situated with the Vikings, completing three of five passes for 18 yards and an interception before suffering a concussion on Sunday.
Packers safety Javon Bullard received an unnecessary roughness penalty for the hit. Wentz replaced Murray and completed 12 of 19 passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns. The Vikings scored 22 straight fourth-quarter points to leave U.S.
Bank Stadium with a division triumph. Minnesota will look to snag another early win at a rival's expense. Wentz may have to orchestrate plenty of scoring to keep up with a Bears squad that began the season with an impressive 59-37 rout over the Chicago Bears.
Sunday's game at Soldier Field starts at 1 p.m.
