Wait, Are Concert Residencies Cool Now?

From Miley Cyrus at the Hollywood Bowl to Harry Styles at Madison Square Garden, pop residencies are getting a major 2026 rebrand.

Concert residencies once indicated that a massive pop career was dwindling toward a dead end. For some, it’s a last hurrah or another cash grab to sustain their lifestyle of the rich and (once) famous. And for others…well, it’s a celebration of their iconic catalogs and musical legacies before they take some much-deserved time off.

But in the year of our Lord 2026, concert residencies seem to have had a better rebrand than Addison Rae’s TikToker-to-Grammy nominee pipeline. Harry Styles is breaking his own record with 30 shows at Madison Square Garden after a 15-night stint in 2022. LISA is bringing her signature swagger to four shows at Caesars Palace, which sold out in under 10 minutes.

And now, Miley Cyrus is gearing up for two nights at the Hollywood Bowl as the “ultimate dress rehearsal” for a longer run down the line. Suffice it to say, concert residencies are back in a huge way, and it’s all thanks to the mother of all residencies: Céline Dion. She helped launch the modern phenomenon of blockbuster residencies that have taken over Las Vegas and beyond—but not because of a lull in her career.

After a public break in 2000, she returned to the limelight and opted for a residency as a home base to raise her newborn son at the time. And, spoiler alert: It really worked out. According to Billboard, Céline had two of the biggest residencies of all time in 2003 and 2011, selling more than 4.5 million tickets combined.

Nearly seven years after wrapping her last Vegas stint, she recently made her triumphant return to the stage with 26 shows in Paris amid a grueling battle with stiff-person syndrome. Her comeback proves that residencies are no longer a gig for the has-beens. While Céline helped establish the blueprint, new-gen stan-era acts like Miley and Harry are redefining the format on their own terms.

Both still have fiercely dedicated fan bases willing to boost their streaming numbers and turn concerts into full-blown experiences, complete with travel, lodging, and merch pop-ups. Much of Harry’s success comes down to his unmistakable charm and the format of his shows: He points out pregnant bellies covered in tiny disco ball mirrors, reads flirty signs out loud, and gives thoughtful speeches between songs. Even as he sings into the mic, he sustains eye contact that could make a grown woman melt.
