The Kansas City Chiefs squandered their chance to take control of the AFC West as they were shut out in the dying seconds of Sunday's loss to the Denver Broncos. But how costly will it prove? Denver scored 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter while overturning an 11-point deficit to stun the Chiefs in a 28-24 win and take top spot in the division.
It came after a magnificent goalline stand as the Broncos stopped the Chiefs on four straight plays inside the five-yard line, albeit with a stroke of fortune as Jaylon Moore's false start penalty negated a would-be game-winning touchdown catch from Rashee Rice on fourth-and-goal. The Chiefs have now lost back-to-back games after a 5-0 start following last weekend's one-sided defeat to the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. "It will be one that is gonna haunt them for a long time because this was a game where they could have taken control of the division," said Sky Sports NFL's Jeff Reinebold on Inside the Huddle.
"And now they're second place in the division. They've stumbled the last couple weeks. That goal line stand was one of maybe the four most intense football plays I've watched in a long time, strung right together.
"On the goalline where you've got one of the top running backs, Kenneth Walker, one on one in the hole. I mean it's man measures man. You're either gonna make the play and and live to fight another day, or he's gonna run through you and get in the end zone and score.
"If you're a Broncos fan, I can't tell you how excited and how incredible it must have felt to watch your team stop one of the best offenses in football four straight from inside the five." Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player Denver took the lead for the first time since their field goal on their opening drive of the game when Jonah Coleman ran in a five-yard touchdown with 1.56 to play. It saw the Broncos capitalise on a short field after Harrison Butker fired his 54-yard field goal wide on the previous possession for the Chiefs. "You can see the frustration, you had multiple opportunities," said Sky Sports NFL's Phoebe Schecter.
"Whether it's as simple as a missed field goal or false start a yard away, those pieces of the puzzle are so frustrating to a team ideally built around great fundamentals and not beating themselves. "You have no receiving core, you are relying on your running game and tight ends but you still have to believe when you have Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes." It was the third time in Bo Nix's NFL career that the Broncos quarterback has pulled his side back from a double-digit fourth-quarter deficit to win, the most since 2024. Nix has divided opinion with his performance so far in the 2026 campaign but threw for 222 yards and two touchdowns to lift Denver to 6-2, enacting revenge for their 31-10 loss to the Chief in Week One.
