Zendaya is dusting off her “Dune” boots and getting back into the world of science fiction. The star has boarded a new untitled sci-fi to be written and directed Alex Garland for A24. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the feature is set to shoot in 2027.

The project marks the latest collaboration between Zendaya and A24 following hit series “Euphoria,” which concluded after three seasons earlier this year, and the pitch-black dramedy “The Drama” alongside Robert Pattinson, which became a box office hit, earning almost $135 million worldwide. For Garland, the film continues his long-running collaboration with A24, which has produced and distributed his 2024 sci-fi “Ex Machina,” plus “Civil War,” “Men” and “Warfare.” A24 is also behind his upcoming big-budget “Elden Ring” video game adaptation, starring Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, Nick Offerman and Tom Burke. Shooting on “The Elden Ring” wrapped on July 30, with the film set to be released in March 2028.

Alongside “The Drama,” Zendaya has appeared in two of 2026’s biggest movies in “The Odyssey” and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which both smashed box office records. Denis Villeneuve’s final trip to Arrakis, “Dune: Part Three” releases Dec. 16. Fans of Garland’s sci-fi — which also includes Netflix feature “Annihilation” and the FX series “Devs” — may be delighted to hear he’s returning to the genre.

But the news could also dent hopes for a third “28 Years Later.” Garland wrote “28 Days Later,” later reuniting with Danny Boyle for last year’s “28 Years Later” and its quick-fire sequel “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.” Speaking recently at the London Film Festival, Boyle said Garland had written a “fantastic script” for the third “28 Years Later” but noted he was now busy working on “Elden Ring.” “So it’s on the back burner at the moment,” he said. Garland’s new sci-fi may push it even further back.
