There may not be a more snake-bitten team in the NFL when it comes to injuries than the San Francisco 49ers. The team has 16 players on the reserve/injured list, and it had to avoid putting star edge-rusher Nick Bosa, who's expected to miss multiple games, on IR because it was running out of “designate to return” spots, meaning Bosa will remain on the active roster but won’t play while he recovers from the calf injury he suffered earlier this week. San Francisco’s defense has been particularly ravaged by injuries with defensive linemen C.J.
West, Sam Okuayinonu, Mikail Kamara, Andrew Farmer, and Alfred Collins, linebacker Nick Martin, cornerback Nate Hobbs, and safety Darrick Forest all on the reserve/injured list, and 2025 first-round edge-rusher Mykel Williams on the PUP list. Needing help on the defensive side of the ball, the 49ers decided to workout multiple players on Saturday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, including a former Pro Bowler. Of those four players, Judon would seemingly make the biggest impact.
A four-time Pro Bowler, Judon is just four years removed from a 15.5-sack season. At 34, his best football is likely behind him, but he can still contribute as a situational pass-rusher. Judon played for the Miami Dolphins last season, logging 19 tackles, 11 pressures, eight hurries, and one pass defended in 13 games.
During his 10-year NFL career, Judon has totaled 429 tackles, 396 pressures, 206 hurries, 111 QB hits, 95 tackles for loss, 72 sacks, 20 passes defended, nine forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries. He wouldn’t make up for losing Bosa, but he would be a solid pass-rushing replacement. Losing Bosa is a big blow to San Francisco’s defense.
Defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa is the only other player aside from Bosa with more than three pressures and three hurries through the first two games.
