As Nick Bosa continues to be sidelined with a pulled calf, the San Francisco 49ers have brought in a new veteran edge to add to their depth. According to NBC Sports' Matt Maiocco, the 49ers have signed veteran defensive end Matt Judon to their practice squad. With Bosa being out with injury, it is not too difficult to understand why they are giving Judon a chance on their practice squad.
He will now provide them with another defensive end who has a good amount of NFL experience, which is certainly not a bad thing for the 49ers right now. Judon also has a strong resume, as he is a four-time Pro Bowler. With this, there is truly no harm in the 49ers giving him this opportunity on their practice squad.
If he impresses, perhaps it could open the door for him to be elevated to San Francisco's active roster. Judon appeared in 14 games last season split between the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills, where he recorded 19 combined tackles. This was after he posted 41 combined tackles and 5.5 sacks in 17 games for the Atlanta Falcons during the 2024 season.
In 145 career NFL games over 10 seasons split between the Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots, Falcons, Dolphins, and Bills, Judon has posted 72 sacks and 429 combined tackles. It will be interesting to see if he can make an impact with the 49ers from here.
