The Alabama Crimson Tide came up short in a close and contentious game against the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday night. And one former Alabama star believes that the questionable officiating in the game was perhaps the biggest factor in his former team's loss. Trailing by 20-17 late in the fourth quarter, Alabama appeared destined to at the very least be in position to kick a game-trying field goal.
Unfortunately for Alabama fans, a field goal opportunity would never come due to what appeared to be a clear missed pass interference call from the officiating crew that would have seemingly have significant ramifications on the outcome of the game. No call was ultimately made, and Russell would take a sack that pushed Alabama out of field goal range on the following play, resulting in a punt.
Alabama would never get the ball back, as Georgia converted several key first downs to ice the game. Naturally, fans, media pundits, and former players alike took to social media to question how the game may have played out if pass interference were called on Georgia on the controversial no-call in question. Former Heisman Trophy winning running back and notable Alabama alum Mark Ingram was one of many frustrated by the officiating in the game, posting an expletive-filled message on social media about the impact officials had on Saturday's razor close matchup.
"Yes we got [expletive] by the @SECOfficiating but who cares!!," wrote Ingram. "BAMA wasn’t soft today we fought hard and we played physical!! The rest can be corrected!!
That’s all I care about is bama not being pushed around and we weren’t!! They played to the standard we expect and that’s why ima sleep good on my pillows tonight!! ROLL MF TIDE!!" It was still no guarantee that Alabama was scoring a touchdown on the drive even if the call had been made. And if they were limited to a field goal, given they make the field goal attempt, Georgia still may have had time to go down the field and win the game on offense. That being said, it sure seems like the officials of Saturday's game certainly did Alabama no favors.
