Alex Vindman Exposes the Trump Resistance Delusion

A socialist ended the career of the Trump impeachment era's most famous witness. The old resistance isn't losing—it's finished.

Alex Vindman is a man whose time came and went, and who did not realize it until it was too late. A few years ago, this might have been a different story for the retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and former national security official.

His polished campaign videos, with their quasi-profundity and ominous warnings about the death of American democracy, were not enough. Outraising his opponent by 16-to-1 was not enough. A personal history as the leading light of Donald Trump's first impeachment was not enough.

Because here is the truth for those still enthralled by the delusion: the old Trump Resistance politics is dead. In Tuesday night's Democratic primary for Florida's U.S. Senate seat, State Representative Angie Nixon beat Vindman 56 percent to 44, in a shock upset.

Nixon is a combative progressive who takes the fight to Florida Republicans. And she is riding a national wave of insurgent success on the progressive left that is going through its own kind of MAGA moment inside the Democratic Party.

Vindman, by contrast, is a potent symbol of the old and failed resistance led by establishment Democrats. Two impeachments that ended in acquittal. A parade of investigations that produced no lasting penalty.

A Joe Biden presidency that laid the ground for their old foe's return. Yet the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee backed him anyway, seeing his anti-Trump credentials as a key to unlocking Florida for the party once again. The party's national security wing lined up behind Vindman: Mark Kelly, Jack Reed and Tammy Duckworth.
