Boston Red Sox catcher Adley Rutschman became a fan favorite with the Baltimore Orioles during the first four and a half years of his MLB career, and made his return to Camden Yards for the first time since Baltimore dealt him at the trade deadline this season. The three-time All-Star marked his return with his best performance in a Red Sox jersey to date, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored as the Red Sox took a come from behind, 6-5 win. Rutschman hasn't had the smoothest start to life with the Red Sox, posting a .193/.270/.368 slash line over the course of 16 games so far.
Boston will hope Thursday's win will boost Rutschman's confidence as they look to maintain their spot in the postseason. Prior to his arrival in Boston, the backstop had a solid season with the Orioles — though not quite at the level of the peak years he had towards the beginning of his career. He hit eight homers and drove in 47 runs through 67 games prior to the deadline, posting a .764 OPS — his best mark since 2023.
The Red Sox are fairly safe in the AL postseason race, currently sitting in the second Wild Card spot with a 5.5-game lead over the third-place Cleveland Guardians and a six-game lead over the Texas Rangers, who are looking to sneak into the playoff picture. The Red Sox parted with five players in exchange for Rutschman, including a couple of extremely valuable prospects. Carlos Narváez moved to Baltimore amid some heavy struggles and is yet to make an impact for the Orioles, though he showed his upside in a strong rookie season in 2025, and each of the four prospects paired with him rank in Baltimore's top 30. 18-year-old outfielder Harold Rivas is still playing in rookie ball, highly-rated right-hander Kyson Witherspoon has a 1.26 ERA in High-A since the trade and outfielder Enddy Azocar has great numbers since the trade, posting a .926 OPS in High-A.
Starting pitcher Anthony Eyanson was the main piece in the deal, and has pitched as advertised since joining the organization. Through five starts with the Orioles' organization, Eyanson has a 2.00 ERA through 27 innings, striking out 40 batters. Rutschman was a fantastic player for the Orioles, but their conundrum behind the plate with the emergence of Samuel Basallo put them in a difficult situation, and gave them a strong future after the trade.
