Viral Nation and Media Trifecta have teamed up to develop an unscripted competition series built around Octagon Metatainment‘s “Rags 2 Richmond” franchise. Buyers will get their first look at the series at the Access Canada Summit, held as part of the Toronto Film Festival’s inaugural market. The series translates the world of Asian male pageantry into a rags-to-riches competition format.

Contestants face challenges built around performance, style, talent and showmanship as they transform their look and image, before a live pageant finale crowns a winner. Media Trifecta’s Kevin Healey, chief creative officer, and Sharone Ostrovsky, chief executive, are steering the project alongside Viral Nation programming chief Paul Telner and an Octagon Metatainment team led by Justina Shih, Simon Yin, Jonathan Wong and Dylan St Aubin. At Viral Nation, we’re focused on helping creators transform their ideas into scalable entertainment properties, and ‘Rags 2 Richmond’ is a powerful example of how creator-led IP can evolve across formats into enduring franchises.” The franchise grew out of Wong, Shih and Yin’s own experiences competing in and observing Asian beauty pageants and talent contests held across North America and Asia.

Canadians make up an estimated 40% of the winners in that circuit, many of them from Richmond, British Columbia, which inspired the franchise’s name. As a vertical series, the property ranked among the top-performing independent titles in the microdrama category, pulling in over nine million views on Instagram within its debut month. Distribution followed through Viddsee, along with brand tie-ins involving Air Canada and K-Swiss.

That cast is led by Wong, joined by Eric Tsang (“Infernal Affairs”), Nancy Sit (“God of Cookery”), Shannon Kook (“The Conjuring”) and Jennifer Tong (“Fakes”). That production wrapped in late 2025, and the film is set to screen at the Toronto market while distribution talks continue. There’s a proven infrastructure in Vancouver that deserves to be tapped, and this team’s fresh perspective has set that in motion in meaningful fashion.” K-Swiss’s role in the franchise has grown as well, shifting from a product placement in the film to commissioning Wong for an anthem marking the brand’s 60th anniversary.
