The Socceroos survive a late onslaught from Brazil with the intervention of VAR just before the half-time whistle when Estêvão’s strike in the 45th minute was ruled out. Bruno Guimaraes grabbed at Harry Souttar’s leg as he was falling to ground and brought the Socceroos captain down with him. Brazil had an earlier shout for a penalty when Lucas Herrington tugged at Endrick’s shirt but VAR decided there wasn’t enough in it.
Despite those two contentious call, the Socceroos were right in this with six of the 13 shots in the half coming from the home side. Nestory Irankunda unleashed one his trademark rockets early in the game but was unable to beat Hugo Souza as the Brazil keeper tipped over.
