Bill Maher learned that when it comes to Donald Trump, no good deed goes unpunished. On last week’s episode of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” the political pundit defended his recent White House dinner with the president, exclaiming, “You know what? I like these dinners,” before conducting an embarrassingly chummy interview with Trump’s former press secretary, Karoline Leavitt.
Despite all his brown-nosing, Trump lashed out at Maher in a 1,300-word Truth Social tirade Sunday night, calling the comic a “complete and total loser” and “major POTHEAD” who “looked like hell” during their dinner this month, where they were joined by ESPN pundit Stephen A. Smith and former rapper Kid Rock. Trump also claimed that Maher had begged him for years to go on his HBO show, but he “will never watch it again, because it is nothing more than FAKE NEWS that America, and the World, is unfortunately subjected to.” Well, Maher took the stage of “Real Time” Friday night and, before welcoming Ted Cruz and the aforementioned Kid Rock as guests, wasted no time addressing that incredibly long Trump rant.
Kind of a flex,” offered Maher during his monologue. The whole point of having these dinners was talk, disagree but listen — which he does, in person — but don’t hate each other, I go back to my job here and the heartaches begin. I’m not going to refute everything, but I do have to address a few of the allegations.” The comic then read from a printout of Trump’s 1,300-word Truth Social post: “It begins: ‘Let’s talk about the complete and total loser Bill Maher’ — you got me there.
I’ll own that,” he admitted, adding, “This is what pisses me off — he doesn’t even notice what I actually said.” Maher refuted Trump’s claim that Maher didn’t think it would be a good idea to disarm Iran by showing a clip of him stating the exact opposite on his show. Then, as to Trump’s claim that Maher “calls him incessantly,” he alleged, “I’ve never called you. I’d be afraid to call you — you’re the president, I think you’re too busy (well, plainly not).” Maher then said it was ridiculous that Trump claimed he “invited himself to the White House,” and that he had “a severely bruised eye and nose area,” by running pictures of him from that day without them.
I think it’s safe to say these two won’t be breaking bread anytime soon.
