Blue Flags awarded but one beach misses out BCP CouncilAnti-litter charity Keep Britain Tidy awarded Blue Flags to six beaches across Bournemouth, Christchurch and PooleA council says one of its beaches has no Blue Flag this year because of an "administrative error", though insists it still has an "exceptional standard of care and quality".Keep Britain Tidy awarded Sandbanks, Shore Road, Canford Cliffs, Durley Chine, Fisherman's Walk and Highcliffe Beach in the BCP Council area, but Avon Beach missed out because of the slip-up."Those who know and love Avon Beach will already know its appeal and its excellence goes far beyond any single accreditation," the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole authority said.A BCP Council spokesperson said when its officers noticed their mistake they appealed to Keep Britain Tidy, but that the deadline had already passed."Avon Beach continues to meet the high environmental and safety standards associated with Blue Flag status," the spokesperson claimed."An administrative error in the application process meant Avon Beach was not put forward for Blue Flag recognition, so it was only eligible for a Seaside Award this year."More stories from DorsetWatch the latest episode of South TodayListen to the latest news from DorsetBlue Flags are a mark of excellence for water quality, environmental management, safety and visitor services from the anti-litter charity.Sandbanks beach was awarded one for a 39th time, and has had the status every year the awards have been running.The six beaches also received the Seaside Award - along with Bournemouth, Boscombe and Avon Beach - which recognises beaches that offer a high-quality, well-managed and clean environment.Regarding Avon Beach's lack of a Blue Flag, the council said its "well-maintained promenades, thoughtfully managed facilities and vibrant mix of cafés, kiosks and amenities, including a popular beach sauna and The Noisy Lobster restaurant" would continue to draw people to Christchurch Bay.Richard Herrett, portfolio holder for destination, leisure, and commercial operations, said: "While awards are important recognition, what matters most is the quality of the experience on our beaches, which we are committed to maintaining across all locations."He added: "We will continue to work with partners to ensure our coastline remains one of the best in the country."More on this story Popular Dorset beach loses Blue Flag statusRelated linksBCP CouncilKeep Britain TidyDorsetBournemouthPooleCoastsBeachesChristchurchEnvironment
