The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won their first game of the season, 24-16, with rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels helping defeat the NFC East's Dallas Cowboys on their home turf. They held a two-touchdown lead late in the second half, then prevented Dallas' fourth-quarter comeback attempt. An Alex Anzalone interception of Dak Prescott's pass as Dallas was nearing the end zone sealed the win for the Buccaneers.
As it became clear the Buccaneers would win, the excitement seemingly caused a scary sideline scene with head coach Todd Bowles. Tampa Bay's coach was shown briefly on camera going down to one knee on the sidelines and appeared to be in discomfort as he steadied himself with a hand on the ground. Amazon Prime's broadcast team mentioned it briefly, just questioning if they'd seen Bowles fall to one knee on the sidelines.
He was later shown on camera standing up again and smiling, but they never addressed what happened on the broadcast. ESPN's Jenna Laine reported that while she wasn't present for the game in Dallas, she heard back on what occurred with Bowles, explaining that he had taken a shot from a helmet to the stomach area.
"He said he caught a celebration helmet to the gut but says he’ll be OK. That’s why he was crouched over like this," Laine said in an X message about the sideline situation. Bowles, 62, notched his first win of the season, with some suggesting the victory was job-saving and helped him stay off the hot seat somewhat.
He's coached Tampa Bay since 2022, taking over after Super Bowl-winning coach Bruce Arians' departure. Tampa Bay is now 1-4 after the win, and it's premature to consider them contenders for the division. They were led by undrafted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels in the victory, as the team awaits starting quarterback Baker Mayfield's return from a dislocated thumb.
However, Bowles has to be plenty excited to achieve a win like this against a heavily favored team at their home stadium. He'll now have his job intact and could build upon the momentum of a stunning victory in Dallas. The Buccaneers return to action on Sunday, Oct. 18, when they host Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers in Tampa Bay.
