Businesses Must Reinvent Themselves for the AI Era | Opinion

Firms are inserting AI into outdated workflows, not rebuilding operations, says Ray Rasmussen, founder of rGen Consulting.

Companies that redesign themselves around AI will define the next economy. Companies that treat AI as just another software upgrade will vanish. Every industry is approaching a point where old business models, outdated processes, and traditional career structures will no longer compete with organizations built for AI from the ground up.

The choice is simple: reinvent your business now or watch someone else replace it. The warning signs are already here. A Gartner survey found that roughly two-thirds of CEOs believe their current business model is not fit for the AI era.

That should alarm every employee, investor, customer, and policymaker. If the people running the world’s largest organizations believe their own companies are unprepared, then the disruption ahead will reach far beyond boardrooms. It will reshape jobs, industries, and economies.

Too many executives are asking the wrong questions. They want to know which AI platform to buy or how to train employees to use new tools. Those are tactical decisions.

The strategic question is much harder: if we built a company today with AI in mind, would it look anything like the business we have now? If the answer is no, then delaying change only gives your competitors time to build the future first. And so, the first assumption leaders must abandon is that business models can stay the same.

The John Deere company demonstrates what real transformation looks like. The firm no longer creates value only by selling machinery. Its AI-powered technology combines computer vision, software, and data to help farmers reduce herbicide use while improving productivity.
