Earlier this week, the Arizona Cardinals officially sent Marvin Harrison Jr. and a 2027 sixth-round pick to the Houston Texans in exchange for two picks in the 2027 draft. The move came amid disappointing starts for both teams, with Arizona and Houston having won only one game in their first five. However, the Texans entered the season with higher expectations after being a playoff contender under head coach DeMeco Ryans last season.
The Cardinals, meanwhile, are still working towards becoming playoff contenders. While trading Harrison Jr. may have been a key part of the Cardinals' long-term plans, the move still affected teammates who had developed close relationships with him, including tight end Trey McBride. "It's part of the business.
I mean, unfortunately, the crappy part of the business is you lose really good players and things like that, and you just kinda have to find a way to keep going and can't let it affect you because it's such a week-to-week business; it's such a 'turn the page and go to the next week,' whatever it is, but it sucks," McBride told reporters. He was a huge part of this team and when he left, I mean, that, yeah, it's gut-wrenching, it sticks, but you have to find a way to move on and be able to grow and move on as a football team," he said.
McBride also praised the team for informing players of the trade before ESPN's Adam Schefter broke the news. So far this season, the star tight end is the team's leader with 308 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He's also had 42 receptions on 55 targets.
Before the trade, Harrison Jr. had just five receptions on 12 targets for 85 yards and a touchdown for the Cardinals, while other receivers, such as Michael Wilson and Kendrick Bourne, received more targets. Meanwhile, Harrison Jr. has a chance at a fresh start in a reunion with his former college quarterback, C.J. The two were teammates at Ohio State in 2022 during Harrison Jr.'s breakout sophomore season, when he had 77 receptions for 1,263 yards and 14 touchdowns.
