Patrick Mahomes has been a full participant in practice throughout training camp, and reports suggest he hasn't lost a step, even after tearing his ACL and LCL last season, repeatedly connecting with the Kansas City Chiefs' top receivers. But he's also the face of the franchise, and there's no real need to rush him into preseason action. He didn't play in the preseason opener against the Rams, with Justin Fields getting the start and both Garrett Nussmeier and Chris Oladokun seeing time as well.
It looks like the plan will be much the same this week. Head coach Andy Reid revealed Thursday that Mahomes will again sit out for the Chiefs' upcoming preseason matchup against the Buccaneers in Tampa Bay. Fields will get the start once more, while other regular starters — including Trey Smith, Josh Simmons, and Ashton Gillotte — will also miss the game.

Still, it's safe to say fans would have liked to see how he looks after all the hype surrounding his recovery this summer. Fields, meanwhile, will get another chance to show Chiefs fans what he can do as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart.
Reid confirmed he'll play into the second quarter this time, after only playing the first quarter last week. He was efficient in his limited action, going a perfect 4-for-4 for 41 yards, along with nine rushing yards on two carries. Nussmeier, a seventh-round rookie out of LSU, also looked sharp, completing 13 of 19 passes for 98 yards in his first live NFL action.
