The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to be in the running to land free agent wide receiver Tyreek Hill at a time when the offense desperately needs to add targets for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Rashee Rice exited Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders early due to a hamstring injury. Tyquan Thornton left Allegiant Stadium on crutches after suffering a dislocated left ankle in the Chiefs' 30-27 win.
Per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Chiefs believe Thornton will have surgery and miss 12 to 16 weeks. Kansas City hopes he can return around the postseason. "He’ll have surgery within the week and there is a real chance at a late-season or playoff return." Thornton is the second-leading receiver on the Chiefs behind veteran tight end Travis Kelce. Through four games, Thornton caught 11 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns. Thornton was injured on a 55-yard reception that set up a two-yard touchdown run by Kenneth Walker III to put the Chiefs up 23-19 with 3:21 remaining in the fourth quarter.
On Sunday, Mahomes called Thornton one of the best teammates he's had in Kansas City. "It sucks that he hurt his ankle on that play, but it was a big play for us," quarterback Patrick Mahomes said of Thornton, via ESPN. "It helped us go get the win.
It's tough because those guys put in so much work. I was in that spot last year. One play can change your season.
"You hope for the best, but at the same time you want to show him support. I know how it is when you're in that position, and it's like the world is closing in on you. He's one of the best teammates I've ever had." The Chiefs are 4-0 and will next host the 0-4 Los Angeles Chargers on Oct. 18.
