New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh says the team could upgrade J.J. McCarthy's position before Week 5.

McCarthy as the team's third quarterback option for Sunday's Week 4 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals, just a few days after he joined the franchise in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings. Jameis Winston led the Giants to a 36-24 victory over Arizona, with Jake Haener listed as the team's primary backup. But as the Giants prepare for this coming Sunday's Week 5 matchup against the division-rival Washington Commanders, an upgrade could be on the horizon for McCarthy.

When speaking to reporters on Monday, head coach John Harbaugh said the team could elevate McCarthy to the primary backup QB position at some point this week. "I think that's a possibility," Harbaugh said. "We'll see how it goes during the week, but that's definitely on the table." Winston completed 18 of his 29 pass attempts for 250 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's Week 4 win.

Haener and McCarthy, who were both active for the game, did not take the field. So we had Jake up, too, and that was our thinking. We just felt like we needed three guys for kind of the two roles.” Sunday's Week 5 matchup against the Commanders will kick off at 1 p.m.
