The hottest play on Broadway is about to land in a city near you. Good luck getting tickets. Cole Escola's Tony-winning Oh, Mary! has announced its North American tour, and it's arriving with two Marys.
Alaska Thunderf*** and J. Harrison Ghee will each take on Escola's version of Mary Todd Lincoln, the former first lady with dreams of cabaret stardom. "It's about Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham's assassination, and it's about her hopes and dreams of being a cabaret star," Escola told Newsweek in 2024, just before the play began its Broadway run.
"It's a very stupid comedy. It's essentially a sitcom," they said. "It's the first two episodes of the Mary Todd Lincoln sitcom." Alaska, for her part, was not expecting the call.
"I've often been asked what my dream role would be," Alaska said in a statement following the announcement. "As an 8-foot-tall drag queen from outer space, I never really had an answer. Wait…that might actually be amazing.
But the point is, I never had a dream role. So, it is an actual dream come true." Ghee will pull double duty, playing Mary at some stops and Abraham Lincoln opposite Alaska at others. "I'm so excited to play opposite Alaska," Ghee said in a statement.
"There are bound to be some brilliant moments, and we are going to set the road on fire with this electrifyingly hilarious play." The tour opens September 19 in Hartford, Connecticut and runs across the country into 2027. Two Marys, one very stupid comedy and a full year for the rest of the country to catch up.
