The BYU Cougars are off to a 3-0 start and a top 10 ranking in the country, but a lot of the discussion around the team centers on a jarring anecdote from Saturday's game. During the No. 9 Cougars' 41-23 win over Colorado State on Saturday, Fox broadcaster Robert Griffin III shared some information about quarterback Bear Bachmeier that left fans reeling. During the fourth quarter of the game, the camera showed April Bachmeier, the mother of Bear (and fellow BYU player Tiger Bachmeier) in the stands, and Griffin decided to share a juicy detail.
According to Griffin, Bachmeier "told us that at the [family] dinners, you know, sometimes they just, they just take the clothes off and they walk around naked." As Jim Buzinski of Outsports noted, "maybe it’s not so far-fetched"to think that the Bachmeiers are a tad eccentric. Buzinki referenced Eric Sondheimer's Los Angeles Times profile of Bear Bachmeier, in which Bear's high school coach said "everything is unusual about" that family. Sondheimer explained that's due, at least in part, to the location of their home.
"It starts with the boys having lived in a forest," he wrote. "Their home in the gated community of Rancho Capistrano is on top of a mountain off Ortega Highway near Lake Elsinore that is surrounded by the Cleveland National Forest. Phone reception goes away climbing the hills during the half-hour drive toward their three-acre property." Given that isolated scene, it's possible the family could participate in some offbeat activities like naked meals and almost everyone would be none the wiser.
At-home habits aside, though, Bachmeier has been stellar for the Cougars this year. In three games, he's completing 71% of his passes for 642 yards so far, with six touchdowns and one interception, resulting in a Big 12-leading rating of 186.7. He's also an able runner, racking up 64 yards on his 12 attempts and adding a pair of touchdowns in the process.
If BYU keeps rolling as they have been, they'll likely end up in the College Football Playoff, leading to more media exposure and, perhaps, a question or two about Bachmeier family dinners.
