The Indianapolis Colts have remained steadfast all season that Daniel Jones is their starting quarterback. However, the team seems to have shifted its stance after Jones was benched in its Week 8 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. According to James Boyd of The Athletic, Colts head coach Shane Steichen said after the loss that he's evaluating everything, including whether Jones will remain the team's starting quarterback.
The Colts are in the midst of a four-game losing streak and they seemingly admitted that they don't believe they are contenders after trading away eight-time Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson and three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner this past week. Meanwhile, Jones has struggled mightily, completing just 162 of his 268 passes for 1,542 yards, five touchdowns and nine interceptions this season. Jones was pulled from the game in favor of backup Anthony Richardson after he threw his second interception of the game in the fourth quarter.
It's safe to say the Colts would have decided to do so earlier this season if they hadn't already invested so much into Jones, signing him to a two-year, $88 million contract extension this offseason. Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has had his own struggles, but it may be time for the Colts to try something new as their 2026 season looks to already be over. A first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Jones has thrown for 19,225 yards, 94 touchdowns and 64 interceptions in his professional career.
