According to The Ringer's Tom Pelissero, the Colts have traded star defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round pick. This comes just hours after the Colts traded star guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks. Buckner was one of the Colts' top trade candidates to watch as the deadline gets closer.
Now, he is officially heading back to San Francisco with this deal. Buckner had been linked to the 49ers in recent weeks before this trade came to fruition. It is understandable, as the 49ers' defense has been in need of a boost.
Furthermore, he is a player the 49ers already know well, as he played his first four NFL seasons with them from 2016 to 2019. This has the potential to be a good trade for the 49ers. Buckner should provide their defense with a nice jolt, as the three-time Pro Bowler can still make an impact at this juncture of his career.
In seven games this season, Buckner has posted four sacks and 31 tackles. It will be intriguing to see how he can build upon these numbers after being traded back to the 49ers from here.
