Following their stunning upset victory over the reigning Super Bowl-champion Seattle Seahawks in Week 3, the Washington Commanders are reportedly signing free-agent running back Austin Ekeler to the 53-man roster, pending a physical. Ekeler suffered a season-ending Achilles tear with the Commanders in Week 2 of the 2025 season, but is now fully recovered. The 31-year-old running back worked out with the Carolina Panthers this past week before ultimately landing in the place where he spent the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
The Commanders currently operate under a running back by committee system, splitting carries between Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Rachaad White. The addition of Ekeler gives Washington another sure-handed receiver out of the backfield. Through 12 games with the Commanders in 2024, Ekeler rushed for 367 yards and four touchdowns, while reeling in 51 catches for 366 yards through the air.
He spent the first seven years of his NFL career with the Los Angeles Chargers, leading the league in rushing/receiving touchdowns for two consecutive years in 2021 and 2022. The Commanders are 1-2 after notching their 33-31 win over the Seahawks. Now, they turn their attention toward a Week 4 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts in London.
