Many Dallas Cowboys fans vented their frustration when a young player who turned heads in the preseason was released on Monday to make room for Emari Demercado, a fourth running back on the 53-man roster. Apparently, other league teams had eyes on quarterback Joe Milton III this week, but he's returning to the Cowboys via the practice squad, per multiple reports. The delay certainly didn't hurt the Cowboys' chances of bringing Milton back on the practice squad. Still, Cowboys fans were confused and upset by the decision to release Milton, who had experience with the team last year.
In April of 2025, the Cowboys traded the New England Patriots a 2025 fifth-round pick for Milton and a 2025 seventh-round pick. He appeared in four games for Dallas last season, completing 69.8% of his passes for 424 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Milton, a sixth-round pick in the 2024 draft, had a strong showing in the preseason, going 29 of 43 passing for 378 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.
However, it appears he needs to show the coaching staff more before he's able to be the top backup option again in Dallas. With Milton on the practice squad, the Cowboys have just two quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. Dak Prescott is the starter, with Sam Howell serving as QB2.
