In the fourth quarter of the Dallas Cowboys' season-opening loss to the Giants on "Sunday Night Football," Overshown pulled up, grabbing at his right hamstring. Soft-tissue injuries can be tricky to evaluate, and anytime Overshown's name pops up on the injury report, it's cause for immediate concern. Turns out that concern is justified.
Overshown is now expected to miss 1-2 weeks with the injury, according to head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Overshown looked visibly frustrated when he got pulled from the game, and given how his NFL career has gone, it's easy to see why. He made a full return the following season and exploded, totaling 90 combined tackles, eight tackles for loss, five quarterback hits, four pass breakups, five sacks, one forced fumble, and one interception returned for a touchdown across 13 games. Then he tore his ACL, PCL, and MCL in Week 14 against the Bengals, an injury that ended his 2024 season and forced him to miss the first 10 games of last season. When he returned, he made an impact, recording 28 total tackles, including one tackle for loss, across five starts.
Overshown said earlier in the offseason how excited he was for this season, noting it's the first time in his NFL career he's felt fully healthy. He even received the green dot for the first time in his time with the Cowboys, a sign the team believes he can be the guy on defense. When an injury happens to a player like that, it's hard to watch, especially a hamstring injury.
Hamstring strains can be notoriously tricky, taking weeks to heal, with the risk of reaggravation if a player is rushed back too soon. That'll be a challenge for the Cowboys to manage with a player who's already been sidelined for most of his NFL career. Dallas next faces the Commanders and Ravens before a road matchup against the Texans in Houston, by which point, hopefully, Overshown will be back on the field.
