The Cubs have announced that they have claimed infielder Gabriel Arias off of waivers from the New York Mets. In addition, the Cubs shared that they have transferred pitcher Phil Maton to the 60-day injured list. Arias being claimed off waivers by the Cubs comes just a few days after he was designated for assignment by the Mets.
Now, he has found his new home with the Cubs through this waiver claim and will be looking to impress. Arias' time with the Mets was very short, as they had just claimed him off waivers from the Cleveland Guardians earlier this month. Now, Arias is joining his third team this season with the Cubs.
Arias has appeared in 44 games this season split between Cleveland and New York, where he has recorded five home runs, 11 RBI, and a .235 batting average. This is after he posted 11 home runs, 54 RBI, and a .220 batting average in 129 games for the Guardians during this past season. Overall, there is no harm in the Cubs taking a chance on Arias with this waiver claim.
He will provide them with another infielder who has a decent amount of MLB experience, which is never a bad thing. In 364 career MLB games over five seasons, Arias has recorded 30 home runs, 111 RBI, and a .218 batting average.
